Indeed you have probably heard phrases such as: “renewable energies are expensive”, “wind turbines are very noisy and pose a danger to birds”; these are categorical phrases which often do nothing other than skew reality, or take an isolated fact and transform same into a proven and safe dogma. We would like to dedicate this article to exposing truths and lies as regards renewable energies.
The Paris Agreement, signed by 195 countries in December 2015, established a strong commitment to combat climate change and to ensure sustainable energy practices for the entire planet. To be more specific, these countries agreed to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius. To this end, said countries undertook the commitment, among other things, to making a transition towards decreasing use of energy sources from fossil fuels or organic matter, in favour of clean or renewable energies, such as solar, wind or geothermal energy, by which energy generation proceeds from the heat of the planet’s interior, or tidal energy that takes advantage of the sea’s tides.
Truths and lies about renewable energies
As a result, the use of natural sources to produce energy is becoming more common; and yet, there are still many false myths and beliefs to be dealt with, which are holding many people back in this transition. Scientific interest is focused on disproving erroneous beliefs such as some of the following sentences as regards renewable energies:
Renewable energies are expensive
This is not true; these are the cheapest energy sources one can find. The technology in terms of how to capture and transform same into energy has considerably evolved, making it much cheaper and more energy efficient. Both wind and solar energy are much cheaper than conventional energy in most parts of the world.
Wind turbines are very noisy and pose a danger to birds
These two statements are unfounded. As regards the first statement, adding here that at a distance of less than 500 metres away, the noise emitted by a wind turbine does not exceed the noise made by any household appliance in one’s home; and as regards the second, in order to give the green light to a new wind energy project, a report must be submitted on the environmental impact that these wind turbines will have in the region. Insofar as birds are concerned, there is a greater occurrence of deaths among these animals, in the construction of roads, buildings or railways.
Renewable energies are stealing space from agriculture and livestock
This is false. Insofar as a wind farm is concerned, it is perfectly compatible with the cultivated field; each of the generators occupies a minimum space; if we speak of the photovoltaic panels used for the transformation of solar energy, these are generally installed on uncultivated land with no agricultural activity, or share the land with flocks of sheep or other activities such as bee farms.
There is a greater demand than renewable energy can meet
This is not true. Whether a country can offer its citizens 100% clean and renewable energy depends solely on the will of its government and its laws. Technological advances would enable any country to implement a fully renewable electricity system.
Wind turbines are bad for one’s health
This is one of the more erroneous statements of all those we have mentioned. There have been many medical and scientific studies undertaken which clearly demonstrate that there is no relationship between wind turbines and symptoms such as dizziness or headaches.
Solar energy has no use at night
This is completely false. Logically, the capture of the light emitted by the sun ceases at night, but thanks to the very latest advanced technology available in this sector, the storage and maintenance of these energies in the electrical generator takes place during those night hours so that these may be used when necessary.
